Playa Ostional is a famous beach located just north to Playa Nosara in Costa Rica. Famous as a nesting beach for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, Playa Ostional also offers excellent surfing opportunities to all sorts of surfers. It features a beach break with fast, hollow and powerful waves. Depending upon the direction of swells, the waves produce both rights and lefts over a sandy bottom. The beach break is very consistent with waves running up to 300 meters. Good swells gather from Northwest, West and Southwest an wind blows from the Southeast, East, Northeast. The size of swells starts working at 1 meter and holds up to 3 meters. [Nosara Surfing] The best time to surf is at a mid to high tide when the swell comes from the southwest. The months from December to March are the best. To the delight of many surf enthusiasts, Playa Ostional is deserted most of the times. During the nesting seasons, surfing is not allowed on the beach. Watch out for rip currents and undertows.
